Happy New Year. Wishing you peace and/or transformation (one then the other?) in 2024. Our year is starting with lots of news from Psyches Cinema – January 2024.
Have you seen Dr. Joanna Gardner’s penetrating analysis of Dumpling? We’re not saying this is the only way to understand this film (fairy tales, films, and art objects all offer multiple and evolving meanings) but if you’re curious about how an expert in mythology interprets our latest offering – check it out!

Fairy tale film workshops
The Maine Jung Center will be hosting a screening workshop of The Linguist. We will explore the tale’s provocative symbols and how they show up in our lives: a child not living up to a parent’s expectations, learning the language of animals, confronting monsters, discovering treasure, and answering a frightening call. In this workshop, Laura will seek to make these old stories new again by updating the film with hidden symbols, humor, modern tropes, and a female hero.
Attendees can watch the 7-minute film ahead of our time together and we will also watch it together in 3 parts. Our discussion will focus on how the symbols and guidance of the tale might appear in our daily lives. Whether in small breakout rooms, or through larger voice and chat discussions, we will use the tools of Zoom to have a lively discussion that explores head, heart, and soul. Get tickets here.
Laura will also be offering a 2-hour workshop using the provocative film and fairy tale, The Two Travelers with Soul at Play on February 24th . We will be adding a link to social media when it’s live.
Filmmaking News
We are just starting our next film inspired by the fairy tale Snow White and Rose Red. Laura is exploring how the themes might appear today. We’re especially interested in the angry little man who torments the sisters. We’re envisioning him as the Capitalist seen in Monopoly. (Still not sure about that monocle!) Watch for more emerging images on Twitter, Facebook, IG.
Mostly, we are practicing symbolic thinking, the language of the unconscious. Laura continues to write blog posts about her experiences back at Catholic Mass, as well as other mythic daily events. (She is hoping to do some serious writing this year about the deep symbols in Game of Thrones.)
We make these films to help spread our love of fairy tales and the practice of symbolic thinking. Our films are available for your use, whether watching alone and journaling around the symbols or discussing in a group. We make them to be shared. We want them to be useful.
If you have an idea to collaborate with Psyches Cinema, please let us know! If you use social media, please join us on facebook or twitter. (We’re not as active on IG so far.) We crave your comments, especially on our website. Thank you!
